Next up was a band I’ve been meaning to catch for a while and one that the main acts wanted put on in Adam Boucher & The Dead Set.
Adam started out as a solo artist, playing a folky sound but has since joined up with Jon on bass and Steve on drums to create his punk ‘shouty folk’ sound. This might sound a bit odd but it worked really well.
With just 30 minutes on stage, the guys made full use of their time, managing to launch through a whole host of tracks. Some have been reworked from Adam’s solo stuff, while others have been written specifically for the band. Either way, they sounded really good. Tracks like “Argh, I’m A Numpty!”, “Growing Up & Getting Out” etc all sounding really good in the confines of the Betsey.
Short, frantic songs with the shouty folk vocals; the set ripped along nicely with little time to catch your breath between songs (but a spot of intra-band piss taking from Adam and Jon often the only thing to split up the set). I’m pretty confident in saying that they went down well on the night as pretty much all of the free CDs they bought along had gone by the end of their set.
Reading the last paragrah, people who witnessed any of our shows on our tour in March will wonder if they’re reviewing a different band! We made a definite point to just knuckle down, play the songs and keep the banter down to a minimum. Seemed to work a treat. As much as I love interaction and between song banter, we’ve definitely stretched the limits of acceptability at times. I say ‘we’, I mostly mean ‘I’!
You can read the whole review (including audio from the awesome Oxygen Thief & Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun) at the link below. It was a really fucking good night. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the blog too.
Another cool link courtesy of Major Matt Mason USA. I really enjoy reading his blog and I really respect what he’s doing with his label, Olive Juice Music.
This is a link to a programme called ‘Soft Focus’,where Ian Svenonius (from Nation of Ulysses) interviews seminal indie musicians. I’m working my way through them, but the Ian Mackaye, Henry Rollins and Steve Albini interviews are ace. Well worth a watch:
Go on then, here’s another video from the last band practice. We don’t have any gigs lined up and I need to write some more songs, so I may plunder more of my archives for stuff to put up here…
We had a band practice before our now-cancelled Guildford gig. It’s a shame it was cancelled, since we were just making headway on our new musical direction. Here’s a snippet, a teaser if you will, of what you could have expected had you seen us in Guildford tonight:
So folks, really shitty news. Our gig tomorrow night supporting the awesome Chris T-T has now be cancelled. This is utter poop but largely out of our hands. There were last minute problems between the promoter and the venue which at this late stage have soured things a little. Chris T-T rightly pulled out and we followed shortly after. It’s highly unlikely anyone was planning to come and see us, but if anyone was, sorry! I’m pretty certain nobody in Guildford has a clue who we are. In fact I know that most people in Britain don’t have a clue who we are! Oh well!
